Cavache, Inc. (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (FL)) recently came to an end of its dredging on the C-37 Canal. The company has been dredging the C-37 for approx. 17 months. While technically challenging from the onset, the level of difficulty has increased as the job continues to progress and the distance from the borrow area to the spoil area widens. Cavache utilized a new, customized 16 in. Ellicott 1170 dredge with its main engine a Acert 32 Caterpillar 1050 hp Marine Engine, which it purchased at the beginning of the job and simultaneously ran four booster pumps in order to dredge and place the material nearly 5 mi. from the borrow area.
The company currently used approximately US$5M worth of equipment on the job. According to Danny Sabon, Cavache's Superintendent on the C-37, "The key to being successful on a job of this magnitude is having highly experienced personnel and great equipment. Two of the four operating booster pumps on the C-37 are brand new and purchased recently from Pearce Pump Supply. We also maintain back up booster pumps to minimize downtime. In total we have over 40,000 ft of pipeline on the job. I have seen first hand the
hurdles that we have been up against on this job and believe that there are not many companies out there that have the expertise to pull it off." Although Cavache is a subcontractor on the job, it performed 100% of the dredging which equates to close to 60% of the entire job on the C-37.

The scope of work on the C-37 Canal, consisted of conducting excavations to widen the bottom of the C-37 canal from 70 ft to 90 ft wide. The purpose was to maintain the existing level of flood damage reduction for the Headwaters Chain of Lakes.
The C-37 was part of the US$1B Kissimmee River Restoration Project, an Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District partnership. The total project consists of restoring more than 40 m2 of the river's floodplain ecosystem, including 40 mi. of meandering river channel and 27,000 ac. of wetlands. The scope of work on the C-37 Canal, consisted of conducting excavations to widen the bottom of the C-37 canal from 70 ft to 90 ft wide. The purpose was to maintain the existing level of flood damage reduction for the Headwaters Chain of Lakes. The C-37 was funded entirely by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
