OVERSEAS SUCCESS FOR ELLICOTT: Contract signed with Government of Indonesia
November 1994
Ellicott International in the US signed a definitive contract for the supply of over $20 million of auxiliary dredging equipment with the Government of Indonesia. The contract was signed by Director General Soentoro of the Department of Sea Communications of the Ministry of Communications in Indonesia, during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit in Jakarta in November 1994. The signing was witnessed by the US Secretary of Commerce, Ronald H. Brown.
Ellicott's contract was financed by a loan to the Indonesian government from the US Export-Import Bank (Eximbank) according to a loan commitment issued last year. Eximbank made the loan offer, with 3.3% interest rate over 25 years, including seven year's grace period, in response to a similar loan proposed by one of Ellicott's competitors.
The contract is for five self-propelled split hopper barges, a tug boat, and spare parts, which will be owned and operated by PT Rukindo, a state-owned dredging company in Indonesia that has responsibility for dredging over 130 ports in Indonesia's 13,000 islands. Ellicott supplied design and machinery packages for the vessels with hull construction and final assembly undertaken in Indonesia.
The split barges have a capacity of 500m3, and are especially designed for shallow draft operations in Indonesian coastal waters. They are designed to American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules, but will be classed by BKI according to @ A100 certification. Equipped with two Caterpillar 3418 diesel engines and Caterpillar 50kVA generator sets, they will have a steaming range of 2,550km. Their propulsion system is based on two 500hp HPP Z-drives. The barges will be used both for land reclamation and harbour development activities.
The tug boat will be used for blue water activities and classed by the BKI. It will be capable of 11kts and will be powered by twin 850hp diesel engines. The tug will have a length overall of 32m, and will be capable of a bollard pull of 20t. It will have a steaming range of 3,000km, crew of 14, and will be equipped with fire-fighting duties with water and foam.
