Critical Environmental Response in the Emory River Valley
The Problem: A Landmark Industrial Disaster
In December 2008, a containment dike failed at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) Kingston Fossil Plant, leading to one of the most significant environmental challenges in U.S. history.
- Massive Volume: Approximately 5.4 million cubic yards of coal ash slurry escaped, covering over 300 acres and choking the Emory River.

The Solution: A Dedicated Fleet of Ellicott® Dredges
Lead contractor Sevenson Environmental Services (awarded a $60 million portion of the cleanup) deployed a high-production fleet of Ellicott® brand cutter suction dredges and booster pumps to lead the underwater recovery.
The Equipment: The fleet worked 24 hours a day, 6 days a week to meet the federal recovery schedule. The use of portable cutterhead suction dredges allowed for surgical precision in removing ash layers from the river bottom.
Integrated Booster Pumps: To transport the dense ash slurry to dewatering and storage areas, Ellicott® booster pumps were utilized to maintain flow and handle the head pressure required for long-distance transport.
Operational Performance: The Ellicott® design was favored for its ability to handle abrasive ash material while maintaining the high solids concentration necessary for efficient processing.
The Outcome: Successful Large-Scale Remediation
The reliability of the Ellicott® fleet allowed the project to move forward without the equipment-related delays that often plague high-abrasion industrial projects.

- Project Milestones: One year into what was originally a projected four-year, $1 billion cleanup, the fleet’s production rates kept the project on track to meet critical EPA milestones.
