    Charles E. Ellicott opened a waterfront machine shop in the growing city of Baltimore, Maryland. Business thrived and in 1888 he was approached by a local contractor to design and build new machinery for a dredge that was struggling in nearby Washington, D.C.

  • 1893

    Mr. Ellicott receives his first patent on the hydraulic dredge.

  • 1907

    The U.S. Corps of Engineers took notice of the success of the Ellicott brand dredges and purchased four dredges for the largest construction project ever undertaken – the Panama Canal. The performance of these machines led to the Ellicott brand name becoming known around-the-world for strong, capable, and versatile dredges.

  • 1910

    The first Ellicott ad is released showing the image of the dredge “Morgan.”

  • 1941

    Built the “Mindi”, a 10,000 HP (7457 KW) 28-inch cutter suction dredge for the Panama Canal. The dredge “Mindi” provided nearly 75 years of continuous operation.

  • 1952

    The “Hydro-Quebec”, a 36” cutter-suction dredge with 12,250 HP (9321 KW) was built for the St. Lawrence Seaway and was the most powerful dredge in the world during its time.

  • 1954

    Developed portable swinging ladder Canal Dragon dredges with design features that guaranteed maximum maneuverability in narrow waterways.

  • 1983

    Designed and delivered to South Korea a Series 17000, 30-inch SUPER-DRAGON™ with 1,000 HP (746 KW) ladder pump, twin hull pumps each rated at 6,000 HP (4474 KW), and 1,500 HP (1119 KW) cutter. One of 3 largest non-self-propelled dredges in world today.

  • 1985

    Made first air freight delivery of an 18-inch, 1,410 HP (1051 KW) dredge to Colombia.

  • 1990

    The Special electric mining dredge known as the “Sandpiper”was designed with 4800 HP (3579 KW). The “Sandpiper” achieved its design production of 2,100 tons per hour during its first month of operation.

  • 1992

    Delivered 5 dredges from stock for emergency Mt. Pinatubo volcanic ash clean up.

  • 2005

    Delivered 50 dredges for various projects worldwide and served over 200 customers in 25 countries.

  • 2009

    Markel Ventures acquires Ellicott Dredges, LLC.

  • 2013

    Barack Obama visits Ellicott headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.

  • 2018

    The powerful Series B2190E Wheel Dragon™ dredge is shipped to Saudi Arabia. Total installed power 2,225 HP (1659 kW).

  • 2021

    An Ellicott™ 670 Dredge with 100 HP (74.6 KW) cutter module is launched in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to aid in the supply of drinking water to the nearby regions.
