Balancing Heavy Maritime Traffic with High-Value Beach Nourishment

The Problem: Navigational Bottlenecks and “Starved” Shorelines

Barnegat Inlet is one of the most treacherous and heavily utilized inlets on the New Jersey coast, serving as a critical artery for commercial fishing and recreational fleets.

  • Rapid Shoaling: Constant littoral drift (the movement of sand along the coast) deposited enormous amounts of sediment directly into the center of the inlet. By 1995, the shoaling had become so severe that it threatened to close the channel to larger vessels.
  • Property Erosion in Loveladies: While sand was piling up in the inlet, the beaches of Loveladies (a high-value residential area on Long Beach Island) were being “starved” of natural sand replenishment. The shoreline was retreating, exposing multi-million dollar properties to storm surge damage.
  • The “Crowded” Inlet Challenge: Because the inlet is a high-traffic zone, any dredging operation had to be mobile and efficient enough to work around a constant stream of boat traffic without creating a permanent obstruction.

The Solution: The Hopper Dredge Currituck

To address the unique needs of a busy, high-energy inlet, the project utilized the USACE Hopper Dredge Currituck. While Ellicott is famed for its cutter suction dredges, the Currituck is a specialized vessel that “chomps” away at the seafloor while maintaining mobility.

  • The Equipment: The Currituck is a “split-hull” hopper dredge. Unlike a cutterhead that pumps through a stationary pipe, the Currituck sucks sand into its internal hopper (belly), sails to the replenishment site, and splits its hull to deposit the sand.
  • Mobile Operations: This allowed the dredge to operate in the “crowded” Barnegat Inlet without a maze of pipelines, clearing the navigational bottleneck while moving with the flow of harbor traffic.
  • Nearshore Placement: The dredge targeted the waters just off the coast of Loveladies. By depositing high-quality inlet sand in the nearshore “breaker” zone, the project utilized natural wave energy to push the sand onto the beach, effectively restoring the shoreline.

The Outcome: Restored Depths and Reinforced Dunes

The 1995 operation provided an immediate reset for both the maritime and residential communities of Long Beach Island.

  • Navigational Safety: The project successfully deepened the Barnegat Inlet channel, removing thousands of cubic yards of hazardous shoals and ensuring safe passage for the fishing and Coast Guard fleets.
  • Beach Restoration: The Loveladies community saw a significant increase in beach width. The added sand provided a crucial buffer that protected the dunes and upland properties from the winter storm season.
  • Economic Protection: By maintaining the inlet and the beach simultaneously, the project protected the two main drivers of the local economy: the commercial fishing industry and the high-value real estate/tourism market.
  • Long-Term Model: The success of this 1995 operation helped establish the “Beneficial Use of Dredged Material” protocol that remains the standard for USACE operations in New Jersey today.
