AI Boom and Strong Demand Drive Growth
Ellicott Dredge Enterprises, America’s oldest dredge builder, celebrated a banner year in 2025, reporting its highest sales and profitability in recent history across its Ellicott, Mud Cat, and IMS brands. During the company’s annual holiday luncheon in Baltimore, CEO Dave Watkins and VP of Sales Paul Quinn shared highlights of a year defined by robust backlogs and unexpected industrial drivers.
The “AI Effect” on Dredging
One of the most notable trends of 2025 was the indirect impact of Artificial Intelligence on the dredging industry. The rapid expansion of AI data centers has created a massive demand for construction materials. Because these data centers must be built near available power sources—often in remote locations—producers are opening new sand and gravel pits to supply the necessary materials. This surge in construction has directly translated into increased orders for Ellicott’s specialized dredging equipment.
Operational Highlights & New Wins
- Busiest Year on Record: VP Paul Quinn characterized 2025 as the busiest year in memory, fueled by a mix of standard cutter suction dredges and large custom builds.
- Major Contracts: Key successes included a highly competitive bid win in South Florida for a repeat customer and the finalization of a 20-inch dredge order for a Canadian client.
- Investment & Expansion: To meet growing demand, the company has hired new staff across all departments and announced plans to increase its investment in stock dredges for 2026.
Industry Recognition
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Seattle District recently recognized the performance of Ellicott’s equipment. In a project fact sheet, the USACE praised the “strong performance and reliability” of a Series 670 dredger operated by Duwamish Services, an unusual level of public commendation from the Corps.
Celebrating Culture
The year-end event also featured the presentation of the “Golden Impeller Awards,” recognizing individuals for their lasting contributions to the company’s culture and success. The 2025 recipients included Todd Johansson, Alex Green, and Robin Manning.
Looking ahead to 2026, Watkins noted that the company enters the new year with a substantial backlog and a positive outlook, stating, “We are winning, and we are having fun while taking care of our employees and our customers.”
